Ruins of Britain's first Cistercian monastery with riverside setting and ancient yew tree.

The atmospheric ruins of Britain's first Cistercian monastery, founded in 1128 by monks from France. Set in a quiet spot by the River Wey, these impressive remains include the fine 13th-century vaulted refectory and substantial wall sections. The site features an ancient yew tree that has watched over the abbey since shortly after the Dissolution of the Monasteries in 1536.

💡 Free entry, open during daylight hours. 5-minute walk across field from small car park through kissing gate. May have cattle grazing - dogs on leads. Beware of adders in summer months.
